Frequently Asked Questions

What is recreational tree climbing?

Recreational tree climbing is an outdoor adventure activity that allows participants to access tree canopies using a rope and harness. Climbers can walk on limbs, swing from branches, relax in tree-top hammocks and explore a normally untouched world. It has been gaining popularity worldwide for over thirty years and has been deemed one of the best outdoor pursuits for active nature lovers.

How safe is it?

Branch Dwellers Ltd is proud to be recognized by WorkSafe NZ as an AdventureMark certified adventure activity provider. This means that our gear, systems, and staff are regularly examined to ensure optimum safety for participants. We are fully insured and all staff members are fully trained and subject to police vetting.

can anyone participate?

To participate in tree climbing you must be six years of age or older. Climbing is a physical sport and can be likened to hiking in terms of energy outputs. To get the maximum enjoyment out of climbing you must be comfortable with light exercise. Our largest harness can accommodate a 42 inch waist size/120 kg. We can however adjust our systems to accommodate those of varying abilities (both mental and physical) if arranged beforehand. The tree-tops are a very special place which we like to make accessible to as many as possible.

Are the trees damaged in the climbing process?

No. As avid tree lovers, we take care to ensure the trees we climb are well taken care of. We minimize our impact on the trees by using ‘cambium savers’ to protect the bark and set climbing routes that avoid nesting birds and epiphytic plants (plants that grow on trees). Our trees are consistently monitored to ensure they are not being over-climbed and we do not climb trees that are especially vulnerable or could easily be damaged by our presence.

What are the benefits of tree climbing?

Tree climbing is such a unique sport that cultivates a deep connection with nature. Not only does it improve strength, confidence, coordination, focus and cognitive skills, but it has been scientifically proven to have a significant positive impact on mental health.
